Islamic Responses to the Capitalist Penetration of the Middle East

Reviews the various currents in the Egyptian society as reactions to capitalism during the 20th century. There were thinkers who were ambivalent about Islam’s position vis-a-vis capitalism. Others condemned capitalism and provided a rationale for socialism. Some thinkers pleaded for the third course, i.e. Islam, and opposed both socialism and capitalism. An interesting summary of Islamic economic thought in Egypt in the 20th century. Based on primary sources. For general readers. Documented.
