- Açıklama: Traces the legal history of waqf in early Islam. The waqf in the Ottoman empire was the most developed and elaborate form of the concept. Although not covered by the orthodox religious law, its acceptance was widespread. Gradually the concept of waqf underwent achange. From the inalienability of the property, the revenue of the property became subject to waqf. Most of the awqaf were imperial lands. The sultans started taxing these properties. Gradually, the trustees turned these properties into family awqaf with taxes going to the state. With the ons et of corruption, the Ottoman sultans reorganised the awqaf on several occasions until they were made subordinate to the Ministry of Awqcif. Subsequently, Ataturk abolished all awqaf.
