Prospects for Cooperation through Trade Among OIC Member Countries

Identifies the principal commodities traded by members of OIC. Analyses the share of member countries in world trade by commodity groups. Discusses in detail the trade pattern for 16 food items. For nine food items, trade can be expanded among members. For the remaining seven food items, there is no constraint in trade as supplies exceed demand. The total potential for expansion of trade for 16 commodities is about $2.95 billion. Member countries have vast food surpluses but manufactures of food products still import from non-member countries. The potential for trade in machinery and equipment is quite limited. Textile manufacturers have a vast scope for trade among member countries. The last chapter draws conclusions and mentions constraints. Also discusses policy implications for expanding cooperation. Contains useful statistical appendices. Based on primary data. For economists. Documented.
